Three Card Poker
Three Card Poker, also known as Tri Card Poker, is a popular, fast-paced poker-style casino table game. Developed in the 1990s, its blend of simplicity and strategic betting has made it a widespread modern favorite. The game is played with a standard 52-card deck and involves players competing against a dealer rather than each other.
Gameplay Modes
Three Card Poker typically offers two distinct betting modes that can be played individually or in combination:
Ante-Play
In the Ante-Play wager, you compete directly against the dealer's hand. After placing an 'Ante' bet and receiving your three cards, you must decide whether to 'Fold' and lose your Ante, or 'Play' by making an additional bet equal to your Ante. The dealer must have a Queen High or better to 'qualify' for the hand to proceed; if they don't qualify, your 'Play' bet is returned, and your 'Ante' bet usually pays 1:1, depending on casino rules. If the dealer qualifies, the higher hand wins.
Pair Plus
The Pair Plus is a side bet that pays out based solely on the value of your three-card hand, regardless of the dealer's hand or whether you choose to 'Play' or 'Fold' the Ante-Play bet. Payouts typically increase with the rarity of the hand:
- Pair: 1:1
- Flush: 3:1 or 4:1 (actual odds vary by casino)
- Straight Flush: 40:1
Hand Rankings
In Three Card Poker, hand rankings largely follow traditional poker rules, but with one key difference due to the three-card format: a Straight beats a Flush. This is because, statistically, it is harder to achieve three consecutive cards (a Straight) than three cards of the same suit (a Flush) in a three-card hand.
